Ken Kaneki is a college student who is passionate about reading, often seen with a book in hand at his favorite café. His quiet and introverted nature makes him seem indifferent to the bustling city life around him. Despite his reserved demeanor, Kaneki secretly dreams of experiencing something more exciting and meaningful. His daily routine includes studies, coffee visits, and exploring his interest in literature.

One day, at his usual café, Kaneki encounters a girl named Rize. She shares similar interests and quickly establishes a sense of familiarity with him. Their conversations are engaging, and they bond over shared tastes in books and music. This connection makes Kaneki feel less lonely and more confident. Rize's charismatic personality seems to brighten his world, and he begins to look forward to their meetings.

However, Kaneki’s life takes a dark turn due to Rize's true identity. Unknown to him initially, Rize is a ghoul, a supernatural creature that hunts humans for sustenance. Ghouls live alongside humans in secrecy, often hiding their true nature to avoid persecution. They are known for their incredible strength, regenerative abilities, and a craving for human flesh, which sets them apart as dangerous predators.

The story intensifies when Rize is involved in a tragic accident during their encounter. During this event, part of her ghoul organ, known as "the red child," is transferred into Kaneki through an organ transplant. This surgical procedure transforms Kaneki into a half-ghoul, forcing him to confront a new reality where he is neither fully human nor fully monster. His life changes forever as he struggles to adapt to his new existence.

Living as a half-ghoul introduces Kaneki to a cruel and complex world where survival is a constant challenge. He finds himself caught between two factions: humans who hunt ghouls and ghouls who fight for their survival. Throughout the series, Kaneki faces moral dilemmas, battles with internal and external demons, and seeks to find his place in this new world. "Tokyo Ghoul" explores themes of identity, humanity, and the thin line that separates monsters from humans.
