The story of Clannad revolves around the life of Tomoya Okazaki, a high school student who is already feeling resentful and disillusioned with his life. His difficult childhood has had a lasting impact on his personality and outlook. His mother tragically died in a car accident when he was younger, an event that left a profound mark on him. Following her death, his father turned to alcohol and cigarettes as a way of coping with his grief, which led to frequent conflicts and fights within the household.
These ongoing disputes caused a strain in the relationship between Tomoya and his father. The tension between them resulted in distant and strained interactions, weakening their bond further. Over time, Tomoya became increasingly rebellious and detached from societal expectations, drifting into delinquency. As he navigates his teenage years, this rebellious attitude becomes a reflection of his internal struggles and unresolved pain from his past.
During a typical walk to school one day, Tomoya encounters a girl named Nagisa Furukawa. She is a year older than him but is repeating her last year of high school due to health issues. Despite her condition, Nagisa is a kind and gentle girl who often appears alone, as most of her friends have moved on to higher grades or different schools. Her solitary demeanor and perseverance in the face of illness make her stand out to Tomoya.
As they begin to interact more frequently, a friendship forms between Tomoya and Nagisa. Their conversations and shared moments gradually lead Tomoya to see life from a new perspective. Nagisa’s positive outlook and determination inspire him to reconsider his own outlook on life and to find hope amid his struggles.
Over the course of the story, their relationship deepens, and Tomoya’s life begins to change profoundly. Through his bond with Nagisa, he learns about the importance of friendship, family, and pursuing happiness despite life's hardships. Clannad explores themes of loss, love, and personal growth, capturing the journey of overcoming despair and finding purpose through meaningful connections with others.
